Welsh Junior and Youth Duathlon Championships
29th April 2009

Prestwold Hall was the venue for the Welsh Junior and Youth Duathlon Championships which was incorporated into the National Duathlon Championships. First off was the junior males with Luke Watson setting a personal best for the first 5km run and was well placed on the bike in one of the lead cycle groups. On the final run he maintained a fast pace to hold off the group and finish 7th overall and took the Welsh duathlon title. Younger brother Jake stepping up to junior this year also had a very good race finishing strongly 18th pace overall and taking 2nd in the Welsh Duathlon Championships. In the female junior race Elinor Thorogood produced another strong display on the bike and clawed her way back with a very good final run to finish 4th overall and take the Welsh duathlon title.

In the male youth race Wales fielded a strong group of athletes from the talent ID squad. At the end of the first run leg Iestyn Harrett established a small lead closely followed by Liam, Grant, Josh and Owain James. He managed to hold on to his slender lead working well in a small cycle group. In hot pursuit Liam and Grant who were cycling hard to bridge the gap but were unable to do so when they reached the transition for the final run leg. Iestyn maintained his good run form to take the Welsh duathlon title and finished 8th overall at the Nationals. Meanwhile Liam managed to make a small break on Grant and held on to the finish to take second place closely followed by Grant. Swim specialist Josh Harris put in an excellent effort to come close behind in fourth place closely followed by Owain James.

Welsh Triathlon Annual General Meeting 2009
1st February 2009

The Annual General Meeting of Welsh Triathlon will be held at 10am on Saturday, 21st February 2009 in the Welsh Institute of Sport, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. Click here to access the agenda.
Nominations were received as follows:

Chair: Dean Hardie I have been the Chairman of Welsh Triathlon for the last 4 years and wish to stand for re-election. I’m involved in triathlon as an athlete, coach, doctor, referee and volunteer. I am on the British Triathlon board of directors as the Welsh Home Nation representative. Triathlon is my passion and I have a lot of time to give to the sport.
Welsh Triathlon has grown in strength and stature over the last few years and we have a strong committee of volunteers who devote their time and energy to help organise and promote our great sport. As Chairman I would feel honoured to lead Welsh Triathlon and take us into the next era with all the help from my friends on the Executive Committee.

Vice-Chairman: Steve Butler (for 1 year)

My name is Stephen Butler I am forty eight years of age and I am very passionate towards Triathlon and its development in Wales. I have been involved with Triathlon for approximately sixteen years. The majority of this as a competitor but due to a recurring back injury the past six years has been spent as a Committee member & Coach with Pencoed Tri Club. My role as a committee member with Pencoed Tri is Events Coordinator. I organise three races throughout the year which have proven to be very successful on the Welsh race calendar. I have been on the Welsh Triathlon executive committee over the last two years.

If elected to carry out the Vice-Chairman position, I feel my past experiences with sport and Triathlon will enable me to develop in this role and help create a solid working relationship within the association and its associated clubs and members.

Secretary: Bethan Fowler (for 1 year)

I have been involved in triathlon for three years, as a participant and, most recently, as an Executive Member of the Welsh Triathlon Committee.

As Secretary, my duties involve responding to enquiries, organising meetings, taking minutes and disseminating information. I feel that I have the necessary personal qualities, interpersonal skills and abilities to carry out these duties efficiently and effectively: excellent communication skills, approachable, organised, diligent, and responsible.

Furthermore, I believe my experience, knowledge and skills as a Head of P.E. Department may be combined with the role as Secretary. Having experienced real satisfaction from my own involvement, I would like to promote to others the benefits and rewards to be gained from participation in triathlon.

In conclusion, I remain enthusiastically interested in the development of all areas of triathlon, from grass-roots participation upwards, to the more strategic aspects of the organisation of the sport. I hope to continue in this role and fully support triathlon within Wales.

Treasurer: Matthew Harvey

I am very excited at the prospect of being involved in the governing body of the sport of triathlon in Wales. Personally, I am relatively new to the sport and completed my first proper ‘tri’ on the Gower in August 2008 – an experience I found immensely enjoyable and enabled me to understand the sport’s appeal to competitors of all abilities. Outside of triathlon, my principle sport is running and I compete for Neath Harriers.

It is an exciting time for the sport in the both the UK and Wales, with a growing level of participants, events and media coverage. Furthermore, with London 2012 only 3 years away, we have an opportunity to help develop the pool of talent within Wales and to help Welsh athletes of all abilities meet their full potential.

I started to train as an accountant in 2003 and became a Chartered Accountant in 2006. During this time I have been involved in a varied portfolio of work from providing accountancy and audit services to growing businesses to advising on corporate takeovers. If I am elected to the post of Treasurer, my accounting background and experience will enable me to help the organisation meet its financial management and reporting requirements.

Executive Officer: Scott Powell

I have been involved in triathlon for 5 years as an athlete (pleased with getting to the finish line!!) and recently as an event organiser. The race that I organised last year, The Gower Peninsula Triathlon won The British Triathlon Event of the Year 2008, an award which I am very proud of. I am currently employed as a Production Manager in an engineering firm. I believe that being involved in a high pressure environment and being formally trained in project management will enable me to contribute to the excellent work already carried out by the current executive committee members.
I am extremely excited to potentially have the opportunity to share my knowledge and understanding of the standards required in event organising which will ensure that racing in Wales is a great experience for all involved.

I believe that in the gloomy current economic environment WT can flourish if we all work together and continue to set the standards that other nations will be find difficult to follow. We are blessed with a number of excellent race venues that will attract athletes far and wide.
It is also important that we create the right environment for all athletes of all abilities to reach their potential at whatever standard that may be.

Executive officer: Clare Hoskins

I raced with Cardiff Tri for 9 years in the 1990's proud to represent Wales on many occasions. The most I did then (other than train and race excessively) was to help organise a few races. I have not been involved with triathlon for several years now but am really excited with the prospect of giving some of my time to help triathlon thrive in Wales. I am currently attempting to get up to speed with Triathlon in Wales so that I am in a position to take a proactive role on the Committee.

I am a litigation and sports lawyer based in Cardiff and have experience in advising sports organisations on policy issues, risk assessments, governance and dispute resolution. I am keen to take a lead in the legal/governance issues that the Committee must deal with. I would anticipate that some of my work experience/skills would enable me to help the Committee to ensure that WT runs effectively and professionally to support athletes and comply with the requirements of modern sport.

Executive Officer: Tom Roberts

Simply put I have represented Wales at an administrative level in a local,
regional, national and international context. I believe I understand the
needs of all triathletes no matter their age or gender. I have been a volunteer for Welsh Triathletes for over 12 years and believe my experience will be advantageous for years to come. I have been involved with the modernisation process which will be of benefit to us all.

In addition to my administrative role I am also Regional Sanctioning Officer. This role allows me to work very closely with race organisers and their teams. The process of sanctioning and its replacement, ensure we had safe races in which to participate. I have ensured that Welsh races have a voice by sitting on the British Triathlon Events Committee. Most people hear me before they see me. I still ensure fair play in my refereeing role and most of the time I use my mantra of education not castigation. I have refereed also at local, regional, national and international level.
All of the above experiences have been fuelled by the love of this sport
and the people who make it what it is. I would like to continue to represent
the family of Welsh Triathlon.

The Treasurer will be presenting his report at the meeting and copies of the accounts will be available to all present. If any Welsh Triathlon member wishes to have the Treasurer’s report before the meeting please email our secretary for a copy.
