Coach
Education
The
British Triathlon Coach Education system is currently developing
courses across all levels. Our level 1 and 2 courses are now being
delivered with the level three being delivered from spring 2005.
Course materials, content and delivery styles are constantly being
reviewed and updated to ensure that British Triathlon provide the
most appropriate content and delivery for our members.
British Triathlon and the
UKCC
Out of 31 sports who applied, we have been selected as one of the
first sports to be supported through this process to implement the
UKCC (UK Coaching Certificate). This has attracted additional government
funding to ensure we can meet the targets established for this project.
This funding has been allocated specifically for qualification and
course development and will allow British Triathlon to design courses
with high quality content, resources and delivery methods.
We will be in a position to deliver an accredited five level coaching
system by the end of 2006. The courses that we currently have on
offer are mapped to the National Occupational Standards and the
qualification criteria established by the UKCC at each level. This
will ensure that there will be comparability across sports coaching
qualifications and raise the profile and professionalism of sports
coaching in the UK.
About us
British Triathlon's Coach Education team is responsible for producing
and delivering a comprehensive education system eventually across
all 5 levels from assistant to world class coach. We are developing
a new coach education programme for the coming season, in conjunction
with sportscoachUK, through the UKCC, that will meet the needs of
triathlon, be relevant to all multi-sport events and most importantly,
produce competent coaches.
The principles that guide the development and direction of the British
Triathlon Coach Education system include:
- meet
the needs of triathlon and be relevant to all disciplines
produce competent and active coaches
- quality
assurance by investment in recruiting and training the tutors
who deliver and assess the qualifications
- meet
the needs of a broad range of people coming into the programme
with a broad range of backgrounds and aspirations
- Supported
by quality learning material
- ability
to evolve to meet the changing needs of triathlon and the UKCC
- aligned
to the National Occupational Standards and qualification guidelines
for the UKCC
What
courses do we offer?
Our national course programme for 2005/06 is now more extensive
than ever, with the inclusion of the new Level 3 courses. Our courses
are held in a variety of high class facilities throughout the country.
The current programme places a great emphasis on a coaches? competence
rather than knowledge (what they can do, rather than what they know).
Through this, we draw out the importance of the "how to"
skills of coaching rather than the "what" skills, in particular
by integrating theory into practice. To enable a coach to progress,
we aim to create more opportunities to put their coaching skills
into practice, with readily available feedback from our tutors.

agencies, and we envisage these levels to be ready for delivery
towards the end of 2006. Please visit this section for future updates.
Accredited prior learning
We operate an APL policy based upon the learning criteria for the
award(s) you wish to bypass. Upon application you will be supplied
with the learning criteria for the award in question and suggested
evidence of competence in the areas detailed within the learning
criteria.
A fee of 40 is required with each fast-track submission. This process
has been reviewed in the past few years and the standards are now
very high. Candidates must be able to prove competence in all areas.
This generally requires a coaching (not teaching or instructing)
award from at least two of the component sports (UK Athletics, Amateur
Swimming Association, British Cycling) and documented experience
in the other sport. If you have coaching certification from another
country we are able to work through the course content to establish
the suitable entry point into the British Triathlon Coach education
system.
Each case is judged independently against this criteria. Applications
for this process should be sent directly to markbarfield@britishtriathlon.org.
