Middle Distance Championships A beautiful day in sunny Pembrokeshire heralded the Welsh Middle Distance Triathlon Championships on Saturday 17th June 2006 Unfortunately due to the HIMUK being held the next day in Wimbleball, Exmoor, Pembrokeshire only attracted a small field of 58 competitors for this race. Of those 58 there were 22 contenders for the title of ‘Welsh Middle Distance Mens Champion’. There was only one female in the race who was from London with no Welsh heritage to lay claim to the title, a disappointing effort from us Welsh Ladies. Even with such a small field there was a ‘carnival’ feel to the day with a great number or spectators for both this race and the sprint event which attracted a healthier field of 123 athletes. The middle distance race started at 11:30 with a two lap swim which saw the first athlete from Bath exiting in a time of 29:42. The first welsh contender to exit the water was Craig Evans of Celtic Tri not too far behind in a time of 31:54, and it was out onto the three lap bike course, which begins each lap with a three mile climb which can test even the fittest of athletes. After the initial climb the course then undulates along the A487 towards Mathry where the athletes take a left turn towards the village of Letterston and onto the main A40 which takes a swift and smooth ride back into Goodwick. The hot weather and mild winds (unusual for Pembrokeshire) meant for quick bike times but the heat took its toll as the athletes embarked on the longer than advertised run. Geoff Ayers (vet 40) from Tri Lakeland one of our Welsh contenders, clocked the second fastest bike time of the day of 2:09:09 which saw him become the leading Welshman in the race. Geoff was able to maintain his position throughout the run in the blistering heat with no shade for comfort. The run route took in two laps of the harbour reaching out to the sea along the breakwaters. Geoff’s final race placing was third overall and Welsh Champion in a time of 4:24:44. The next Welshman home was Gareth Battle (male open) of Rhondda Tri in a time of 4:50:23 and hot on his heels was Brian Palmer the ‘super vet’ of Celtic Tri. Glyn Williams (‘vintage vet’) completed the course in a time of 5:53:14.

This is the second year that this event has taken place at this venue. There were 100 entries across the four categories that were taking place. The weather forecast for the day was not good and true to form, storm force winds and driving rain greeted athletes and supporters on race morning. The athletes did not seem to notice the weather and went about their pre-race checks in a professional manner.
The Welsh winners of the different categories were:
Home Nations Duathlon 2006 15th May Edinburgh hosted the Home Nations Duathlon this year on Saturday 13th May. The race was held in Holyrood Park and the bike course circled the historic city's Arthur's Seat. The 10k run was followed by a tough, technical and hilly 40k bike ride with a 5k run to finish off with. There was a good field because the event also incorporated the British Championships and the Scottish National Championships. It was also part of the National Ranking Series and a qualifier for the World Duathlon Championships in Canada later this year. The juniors were first off covering 5k, 20k and 2.5k. Ben Powell was racing for Wales. Alistair Brownlee led the race from start to finish but there was a tough battle between Ritchie Nicholls of Scotland and Ben Powell who also train together at the Swansea High Performance Centre. Ritchie went ahead of Ben on the first run but a strong bike leg meant Ben had a 20 second advantage going onto the second run. Ritchie is a very strong runner so it was going to be touch and go whether Ben could hang on to 2nd place - unfortunately he was caught at the very end and ended up a few seconds back in 3rd place. Alice Bevan had it all to do against the older and more experienced Scottish and English girls but she had a good race coming in 3rd well ahead of the Irish girl. Next off were the veterans. Tom Davies came all the way from Denmark to race for Wales and put in his usual solid performance coming 1st. He was 3rd overall of all the competing seniors and veterans. He was a comfortable winner in his category, winning a gold medal in the British Triathlon age-group championships, helped by an outstanding bike leg - in fact only 4 of the elite athletes in their drafting race had a faster bike split. Lorna Shaw had a good race finishing 3rd for Wales but also getting a bronze medal in her BT age-group category. The senior elites and under 23's went off together in the afternoon - this was a drafting race although the hilly and technical nature of the course wasn't really conducive to much pack formation. Jonathan Wills got off to a great start breaking away with Kairn Stone and Tom Lowe from the chasing pack but was blowing somewhat when he got into transition having red-lined most of the way. He got out on the bike with the other 2 to form a pack but was soon dropped on the first hill having then to ride most of the remaining course solo. He was overtaken by Scotland's Fraser Cartmell and Dave Brown on the bike but managed to reel them back in on the run to finish 3rd overall and 2nd in the Home Nations field. This result will also hopefully qualify him for the British Elite team to go to the World Championship in Canada. Catriona Morrison and Helen Lawrence fought it out for 1st and 2nd places. Eloise Crowley for Wales did not finish. In the under 23 field Thom Phillips had a bike malfunction which meant he also couldn't finish the race - shame as he was going well on his bike until his derailleur collapsed on him. Carla Molinaro had a steady race finishing 3rd in her category. We wish the race all the best for the 2007 European Duathlon Championships which will be held there. Hopefully there will had a few more marshals and safety procedures in place for the fast decent down the last miniroundabout - this could be a nightmare area wet conditions. The final standing were:- England 13 Scotland 19 Wales 21 Ireland 35 Welsh Championship Awards Policy 5th May 2006 Welsh Triathlon wishes to clarify the position with regards to its awards policy. - Ben Powell Team Manager - Dean Hardie Assistant Team Manager – Dave Hart Llanelli Duathlon 11th April This year the Llanelli Duathlon had a new venue and incorporated the Welsh Senior and Junior Championships as well as the Welsh University Championships. In previous years the race has been held in Stradey Park rugby club but this year it was held at the recently redeveloped North Dock in Llanelli. The sun was out, the wind was down but it was a chilly morning. It was a mass start for the 5k/30k/5k duathlon with Lewis Hobbs a few seconds ahead of the pack coming into the 1st transition. Lewis is a very accomplished cyclist and built up a big lead on the bike leg and coupled with a solid 2nd run finished 4 minutes ahead of 2nd placed Simon Gibbs of UWIC. Carla Molinaro of UWIC lead the field from start to finish.

30th March The Welsh Grand Prix series is determined over a number of races throughout the season. It is calculated on the first finisher being awarded 1000 points (100%) and all subsequent finishers being awarded points based on a percentage away from from the first place finisher. To help triathletes understand how this process works a Competitors Guide has been published. As the Grand Prix events unfold Welsh Triathlon aim to provide a listing of positions which will be published on the website. Youth

Drafting Rules Changes to the Drafting Zone- Take note for 2006 season. The ITU recently published their revised rules for the coming season and the major change involved the drafting zone that surrounds each cycle whilst competing in a triathlon or duathlon. In previous seasons, for Age Group races (excluding long distance races), the drafting zone measured 5m x 2m and the centre of the leading 2 metre edge was measured from the back edge of the back wheel. However, the new rule will be as follows: "The draft zone is a rectangle measuring seven (7) metres long by three (3) metres wide which surrounds every cycle on the cycle course. The front edge of the front wheel defines the centre of the leading three (3) metre edge of the rectangle." Although the drafting zone is slightly bigger, each athlete will still have 15 seconds to move through another competitors' draft zone. As the beginning of the season draws closer, it is important that athletes, referees and race organisers note this rule change and are prepared to abide by it. The new 2006 rule book, which will be distributed in April, will include this new rule. As stated a few weeks ago, the Rules and Technical committee are conducting a complete review of the drafting situation including current penalties, deployment and education of motorcycle referees and the education of athletes and race organisers. Please note that for long distance races, the drafting zone is still 10m x 3m and each competitor has 30 seconds to move through another competitors drafting zone. New
