Inter Regional Championships 2007
20th September 2007

Almost a year to the day, aspiring triathletes from across England, Scotland & Wales gathered once more in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow, for the 2007 Inter Regional Championships. The fourteen-strong Welsh team consisted of a mix of “seasoned campaigners” and new recruits, all highly motivated to give their best effort for their country.

Team spirit was tremendous, assisted by a real sense of Welsh identity through a snazzy team kit, sponsored by International Medical Supplies. The company provided £750 sponsorship, helping to ensure that the athletes were warm and stylish all day.

The weather on this occasion was also much kinder for the triathletes, thankfully, with sunshine at times instead of the relentless downpour of last year, and much more pleasing to the large number of spectators that clapped and cheered the twelve- to sixteen-year olds around the challenging, technical course.

Racing began with the Tristar Two athletes. Representing Wales was Liam Bradley, Daniel Own, Kate Matchett and Megan Withers. The Welsh boys finished 11th and 16th respectively, and 5th and 21st in the girls’ event. Daniel showed real determination to continue on to the finish after slipping and injuring his knee at the bike dismount – well done, Dan!

The next heats were for Tristar Three boys and girls. Iestyn Harrett and Alex Matchett were the Welsh boys and Hywelis Thomas-Howells and Heledd Williams were the Welsh girls. Hywelis once again showed what tough stuff the welsh contingent are made of: she came home second, behind Camilla Freeman and one place in front of Chloe Cook, only to find out she had come in one lap short on the run. She immediately turned around and ran back out to complete the full distance, achieving 13th place in her category. Iestyn finished 11th, Alex 9th and Heledd 17th in this age group, each giving a solid performance.

The Youth category completed the day’s racing, with six athletes representing each region. Jack Newton, Jake Watson and Emyr Rees, Ruby Miller, Elinor Thorogood and Manon Williams were the Welsh representatives in this instance. The standard within this category was exceptional, with the winning boy Tom Bishop of the East Midlands region finishing over 6 minutes faster than the previous year’s winner! Jake finished 29th, Emyr was 26th and Jack finished 16th, and in the girls Ruby, Elinor and Manon finished 10th, 15th and 21st respectively.

Relief at the conclusion of the day’s competition turned to anticipation, as the announcement of the overall regional standings drew close. Wales finished a respectable 7th out of 11 with 672 points. The South East region was overall winner for the second year in a row with 987 points. For the Welsh athletes it was a day of outstanding effort and a commitment to work hard to improve and develop in the future and come back to the IRCs again. It was concluded with a Team Dinner for everyone that hadn’t already set off on the long journey home, which was enjoyed by everyone.

In conclusion, it was a real privilege to be present at this event, and Team Manager for a group of dedicated and highly professional young ambassadors of Welsh sport. I must send out my congratulations and thanks to each of them, and also to the sterling support from the families. It is anticipated that next year’s Championships will be held in Crawley, and I hope that it will produce another weekend of amazing camaraderie and competition.

Welsh Tristar/Youth Championships, RAF St Athan
4th July 2007

Sunday 1st July saw the long awaited Welsh Tristar and Youth Championships at RAF St Athan. On arrival weather was torrential but by the time the racing started we were blessed by a window on sunshine.

The number of competitors was quite low compared to previous races but there was a quality field with no clear favourites throughout the categories.

In the male tristar 2 event there was alot of nervous tension as there were at least 5 athletes competeing for the 2 places available for IRC selection. Again Daniel Owen emerged a strong competitor and held on to win. In the female tristar 2 event Megan Withers dominated the race from start to finish and was a clear winner.

In the male tristar 3 event Istyn Harrett emerged from the water first but was closely followed by Alex Matchett who took the lead on the bike leg and held on to win. In the Female tristar 3 event Hywelis Thomas-Howells showed what a good athlete she is by dominating the race from start to finish.

In a very small field, Jack Newton came home first to win the male youth category, while Ruby Miller also won the female youth category comfortably.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark Livesey and his team at RAF St Athan for putting on a well organised race and to be able to use such an excellent facility.

Welsh Tristar 2 and Youth championship winners:

Male Tristar 2 Daniel Owen   Female Tristar 2 Megan Withers

Male Tristar 3 Alex Matchett   Female Tristar 3 Hewylis Thomas-Howells

Male Youth Jack Newton   Female Youth Ruby Miller

Welsh National Club Champions for 2007
3rd July 2007

Clubs may enter as many or as few competitors in the race but only the three highest positioned athletes will count. Competitors must register as competing for their respective clubs when entering the race. Clubs without competitors or having insufficient competitors in any given category will be awarded the highest points total for that category. Full teams of six will always be scored ahead of teams of five or less. In this regard clubs are encouraged to make sure they have at least 3 male and 3 female athletes in the nominated race. The club with the lowest combined score will be declared the winner. Clubs must be British Triathlon affiliated on the day of the race and from within Wales.

A shield trophy will be awarded to them in due course. This is a brand new trophy and will be passed onto the new winners each year. It will be engraved every year to serve as a reminder of previous winners. The nominated race each year will be the same event as the Welsh Standard Distance Triathlon Championships.

As a reminder the winners are based on:-
1st, 2nd and 3rd male
1st, 2nd and 3rd female
Points will be awarded for the competitor’s position within their category (male or female), 1st = 1pt, 2nd = 2pts …. 43rd = 43pts.

Tim Don and Julie Dibens Crowned as National Champions
10th June 2007

In fine weather and on a tough course, Tim Don and Julie Dibens emerged from the weekend's action in Parc Bryn Bach, Wales, as National Triathlon Champions following the Corus Elite Series race on Saturday.

Dibens forged her victory on the tough ten lap cycle course, which took the athletes up and over a testing climb before shooting them down a fast and technical descent. Having exited the water in the lead pack, Dibens took to the front of the bike and carved out a four minute lead over her nearest rivals, Rosie Clarke, Andrea Whitcombe, Vanessa Raw and Abbie Thorrington.

Although she was run into by Whitcombe, Dibens held on for a comfortable victory in a time of 1:59:12. Whitcombe took second having recorded the fastest run split of the day, whilst Jeanna Collonge of France ran her way up to third. Rosie Clarke finished fourth and took the National Championships bronze medal.

Parc Bryn Bach Corus Elite Series, Women's Results:
1. Julie Dibens, England
2. Andrea Whitcombe, England
3. Jeanne Collonge, France
4. Rosie Clarke, England
5. Vanessa Raw, England
6. Kerry Lang, Scotland
7. Carol Bridge, Wales
8. Heather Jackson, England
9. Sam Herridge, Guernsey
10. Jodie Stimpson, England

The men's race was a tight affair and featured an all star cast of Britain's best triathletes.

Stuart Hayes and Harry Wiltshire injected pace into the 1500m lake swim and strung out the field ensuring that only small packs would form on the testing bike section. Hayes exited transition first and formed a hard working bike group with Andrew Fargus, Will Clarke, Tim Don, Nathan Shaw and South Africa's Hendrik DeVilliers.

As time wore on, the pace at the front grew ever stronger and started to take its toll. Shaw fell during the technical section and retired from the race, whilst Clarke crashed and punctured, relegating him down the field as he crawled round the lap for a wheel change. Towards the end of the bike both Fargus and DeVilliers were dropped as Andrew Johns and Karl Shaw, brother of Nathan, impressively rode their way up to Hayes and Don at the front.

As the lead group of four athletes exited for the run, Don and Hayes immediately broke away, however it wasn't long before Don was running solo at the front and was on course for victory. Clocking 32:35 for the run, Don had time to enjoy his fourth consecutive British title whilst Johns powered past a tiring Hayes in the final 300m to take second.

Further down the field, Under 23 Ritchie Nicholls recorded the fastest run time of 32:19 to finish sixth, whilst Will Clarke ran himself up to 17th having lost a full six minutes on the leaders following his crash, puncture and wheel stop. 11 of the 40 starters did not finish in the testing conditions.

Parc Bryn Bach Corus Elite Series, Men's Results:
1. Tim Don, England
2. Andrew Johns, England
3. Stuart Hayes, England
4. Karl Shaw, England
5. Hendrik DeVilliers, South Africa
6. Ritchie Nicholls, Scotland
7. Daubord Brice, France
8. Ollie Howton, England
9. Samer All Saad, Spain
10. Harry Wiltshire, England

Triathlon's Battle of Britain comes to Parc Bryn Bach this weekend
7th June 2007

Parc Bryn Bach, near Tredegar, will host the second event of the Corus Elite Series, a three race triathlon competition, on Saturday June 9th thanks to the backing of the Welsh Assembly Government and Blaenau Gwent Council. The Parc Bryn Bach event will also double as the British Championships.

The Corus Elite Series race will be the first major multisport event to be hosted in Wales since 2004, when Swansea held the European Duathlon Championships. Funding from the Welsh Assembly Government supports the 2007 Elite Triathlon Series at Parc Bryn Bach.

The scenic course will give the spectators great opportunities to view the competitors as they wind their way around the lake and park. The 1500m swim takes the athletes around the lake's islands before they exit into transition for the 40km bike. The cycle course consists of 10 hilly laps around the nearby forest, bringing the athletes back through transition each time around. Finishing with a 10km run, the race result will be decided with four laps of the lake on a newly laid footpath.

Wales will be represented by a pool of established athletes and developing youngsters. Unfortunately reigning British Champion, Helen Tucker from Bridgend, is out with an Achilles injury; however Carol Bridge from Pontypandy is currently enjoying a good run of form having taken sixth place at the first Corus Elite race in Scotland. Eloise Crowley from Cardiff is another young hopeful, whilst Wrexham's Oly Stanley will be the sole Welsh representative in the men's race.

An impressive field of British World Champions will also be taking to the course, including Senior World Champion and reigning British Champion, Tim Don; World Under 23 Champion, Will Clarke and World Junior Champion, Alistair Brownlee. They will be joined by World Student Champion, Harry Wiltshire and World Aquathlon Champion, Richard Stannard. The race has already attracted international athletes such as South Africa's Hendrik De Villiers and Frenchman, Carl Blasco.

Carwyn Jones, the Minister for Education and Culture, who has responsibility for Sport in the Welsh Assembly Government, commented: "I'm very pleased that the Welsh Assembly Government is supporting this elite Triathlon in Tredegar. It is a great opportunity to see top-class athletes competing in Wales, and demonstrates the Welsh Assmebly Government commitment to bringing major sporting events to Wales. I'm sure that the event will be a great success and I hope it will be an inspiration for spectators to get involved in sport. I wish the very best of luck to everyone taking part."

The women starts at 11am and the men at 1:30pm.

Two OLYMPIANS are presenting the East Wales Coaching Conference at UWIC on Saturday 31st March 10am-1pm.

Neil Adams MBE is the most successful British Judoka ever, having won the first ever World Men’s Championship and twice winning Olympic Silver medals not to mention 7 times European Champion. He also holds 21 British Champion titles to his name. He combines this experience with the skills that are required to overcome and manage extraordinary stress as well as the drive, determination and perseverance it takes to succeed.

Niki Adams, an Olympian herself for the Canadian Olympic Judo Team joins Neil in their corporate Health organisation. She has 15 years of physical fitness experiences, possesses a degree in Communications /Cultural Studies and a Diploma in Wellness and Lifestyle Management. This combination provides her with an all round practical and theoretical knowledge base.

They will be discussing a variety of topics including;

  • The transition period between being an athlete and becoming a coach.
  • The development of the coach and methods used to nurture athletes in preparation for competitions.
  • Taking time to prepare successful coaching sessions.
  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
  • Time management.

Few of us are full time coaches and therefore we have to balance coaching with our work, social and home lifestyles which can be very challenging. Consequently, some of the discussion areas will be aimed at how we can deal with these pressures.

This coaches conference should give us coaches the chance to raise some interesting points, listen to some very experienced speakers, learn from their experiences and indeed share and learn from each others.

Coffee and tea will be served on arrival. For further information and to book your place on this day contact Andy Lane via email: eastwalescoaching@britishtriathlon.org or phone: 07749470716.

Welsh Triathlon Annual General Meeting 2007
1st February 2007

The Annual General Meeting of Welsh Triathlon will be held at 10am on Saturday, 24th February 2007 in the Welsh Institute of Sport, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. Click here to access the agenda.

Nominations received are as follows:-

Chairman: Dean Hardie

I have been the Chairman of Welsh Triathlon for the last 2 years and wish to stand for re-election. I’m involved in triathlon as an athlete, coach, doctor, referee and volunteer. I have been heavily involved in the modernisation process of British Triathlon and the newly formed British Triathlon Federation. Triathlon is my passion and I have a lot of time to give to the sport. I was honoured recently to receive the BTA national volunteer of the year award.

Welsh Triathlon has grown in strength and stature over the last few years and we have a strong committee of volunteers who devote their time and energy to help organise and promote our great sport. As Chairman I would feel honoured to lead Welsh Triathlon and take us into the new era with all the help from my friends on the Executive Committee.

Treasurer: Tony Goddard

My name is Tony Goddard; I am 40 years old and have been involved in Triathlon since 2003 although I have enjoyed watching races on the TV since 1996. I am the current holder of the post of Treasurer since October 2005, officially being ratified at the 2006 AGM.

I am in fulltime employment working as a Consultant Electrical Engineer for a Global Consultant locally based just outside Cardiff.

I am an enthusiast of Triathlon and look to take an active role to help, develop and promote the sport of Triathlon in Wales. This is primarily via taking part in races 2 or 3 times a year, marshalling when called upon and currently as Treasurer/member of the executive committee.

My desire in to continue in the post as Treasurer as I feel I have more to offer in the way of organisational skills with the financial affairs of Welsh Triathlon and to continue help/contribute to the growth of the sport within Wales and to see Wales produce future World and Olympic Champions.

I hope from the above you can see and feel the passion and pride I feel about the sport of Triathlon.

Executive Officer: Tom Roberts

Simply put I have represented Wales at an administrative level in a local,
regional, national and international context. I believe I understand the
needs of all triathletes no matter their age or gender. I have been a volunteer for Welsh Triathletes for over 10 years and believe my experience will be advantageous for years to come. I have been involved with the modernisation process which will be of benefit to us all.

In addition to my administrative role I am also Regional Sanctioning Officer. This role allows me to work very closely with race organisers and their teams. The process of sanctioning and its replacement, ensure we had safe races in which to participate. I have ensured that Welsh races have a voice by sitting on the British Triathlon Events Committee. Most people hear me before they see me. I still ensure fair play in my refereeing role and most of the time I use my mantra of education not castigation. I have refereed also at local, regional, national and international level.

All of the above experiences have been fuelled by the love of this sport
and the people who make it what it is. I would like to continue to represent
the family of Welsh Triathlon.

Executive Officer: Terry Jones

I have been involved in the sport of triathlon for the last 13/14 years and in that time have been fortunate to have experienced and enjoyed the sport at all levels. Over the last 12 months I have also been a member of the Welsh Triathlon Executive Committee which gave me the opportunity to put something back into the sport. I think it has probably taken me most of the first year to actually find my feet and get used to and experience the workings of the committee.

I would like a further spell in this position to help push forward Welsh Triathlon, especially now in the new world of the British Federation of Triathlon.

Executive Officer: Steve Butler

My name is Stephen Butler I am forty six years of age and I am very passionate towards Triathlon and its development in Wales. I have been involved with Triathlon for approximately fourteen years. The majority of this as a competitor but due to a recurring back injury the past four years has been spent as a Committee member& Coach with Pencoed Tri Club. My role as a committee member with Pencoed Tri is Events Coordinator. I organise three races throughout the year which have proven to be very successful on the Welsh race calendar.

If elected to carry out the Executive Officer position, I feel my past experiences with sport and Triathlon will enable me to develop in this role and help create a solid working relationship within the association and its associated clubs and members.

The Treasurer will be presenting his report at the meeting and copies of the accounts will be available to all present. If any Welsh Triathlon member wishes to have the Treasurer’s report before the meeting please email our Secretary for a copy.
